How many times do you hear the words, “Support our Troops” and wonder what can I do? I am only one person-I try to remember to wear red on Friday’s, wear my red, white and blue flag jacket especially on July 4th and September 11th and whenever else I can, I forward all the emails with pictures of soldiers trying to forget where they are and just wishing they were home. To me, it’s just not enough and I would like to do more because they deserve more. I recently saw an episode of American Chopper where the owner Paul Teutel Sr., a veteran himself, was approached to build a motorcycle for the Iraq Star Foundation. This foundation provides U.S. soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan with free reconstructive surgery. I was so moved, I wanted to do something. What I would like to do is bring a piece of home to the recovering veterans by making super, soft, blankets made of cuddle fleece. Everyone grew up having their own “blanket” which provided them with security and safety and I thought the soft, patriotic colored blankets would make them feel better, feel loved by their country, and it would feel better than any hospital issued blankets. I have many people who are willing to donate their time to sew the blankets but, in these tough, economic times, I am finding it difficult to get monetary donations to defray the cost of the fleece. If I can get the fleece on sale (6.50 per yard x 4 yards), each blanket costs $26.00 to make, or (13.00 x 4 yards) $52.00 not on sale. I have been trying to contact fleece manufacturers for discounts, but have got nowhere. This is such a small gift that I hope would put a smile on a soldier’s face and hopefully make them feel loved by their country and this is how I would like to “Support our Troops.” Thank you very much, Maura Price DONATIONS CAN BE MADE TO: WORKERS’ CREDIT UNION Attn.
